Train Yourself

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:7–8, NIV 1984).

My Musings – What are “godless myths and old wives’ tales?” Anything inconsistent with or in contradiction of God’s word. But we must be careful. Some will have the “form of godliness,” (2 Timothy 3:5, NIV 1984), but are in reality worthless.

My Advice“Let [us] not deceive [ourselves] by trusting what is worthless, for [we] will get nothing in return,” (Job 15:31, NIV 1984). But if we “train [ourselves] to be godly‘” we will not be deceived. More than that we will achieve something of value that holds “promise for both the present life and the life to come.

Therefore, we must “do [our] best to present [ourselves] to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15, NIV 1984). Just know that correct handling requires Godly training. Let’s do our best.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
