Because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. (Hebrews 7:24–25, NIV 1984).
My Musings – As the Messiah, Jesus traces his lineage through the kingly tribe of Judah, not the priestly tribe of Levi. Yet like a priest, “Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God…interceding for us.” (Romans 8:34, NIV 1984). How can this be? Because “the Lord [had] sworn and [did] not change his mind: ‘You [Jesus] are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.'” (Psalm 110:4, NIV 1984). A priestly order that existed before Levi and has no end.
Melchizedek was a true but mysterious historical figure, who blessed Abraham and received a tithe from Abraham. He was the “King of Salem and priest of God Most High…without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life.” (Hebrews 7:1, 3, NIV 1984). An apt description of our Lord. “‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham [and Levi] was born, I am!'” (John 8:58, NIV 1984).
My Advice – The point is, Jesus conquered death giving Him “a permanent priesthood” enabling Him to “save completely” and “always [live] to intercede.” But only for those who “who come to God through Him.” If we want something that is complete and permanent, we need look nowhere else. Indeed, there is nowhere else we can look.
