Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. (James 4:4, NIV 1984).
My Musings – It is a dangerous thing indeed “to be a friend” of mainstream culture without first determining how it aligns with Scripture.
Be particularly wary of new “interpretations” that are contrary to centuries of universally accepted interpretations, the plain meaning of the text, or that are taken out of context.
“The time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3–4, NIV 1984).
This is also true for claims of “science,” for as we know, many theories have come and gone throughout the ages and continue to do so.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years! Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth? Do they report to you? Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct him?” (Job 38:4-5, 21, 33, 35, 40:2, NIV 1984).
My Advice – Let’s be very careful about contending with God and His Word or following those who do. “Surely [they speak] of things [they do] not understand, things too wonderful for [them] to know. (Job 42:3, NIV 1984). It is wise to be skeptical, particularly in this day and age where opinion and preference is frequently substituted for the truth.
“Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?” (1 Corinthians 1:20, NIV 1984).
