God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. (1 John 1:5–6, NIV 1984).
My Musings – We all fail at times, at least I do. But if we persist in “[walking] in the darkness,” yet proclaim to be in fellowship with Christ, John is quite clear. “We lie and do not live by the truth.”
Failing at times, if left unconfessed, will strain our fellowship with the Lord. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:8–9, NIV 1984).
But a habitual and persistent life of darkness is likely evidence that there never was a relationship to begin with. “The man who says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not do what He commands [walk in the light] is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” (1 John 2:4, NIV 1984).
My Advice – “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” (Isaiah 9:2, NIV 1984). It is foolish to continue “walking in darkness.” But we must do more than “[see the] the great light.” We must come into or back to it and “walk in the light, as He is in the light.” (1 John 1:7, NIV 1984).”
