A Manner Worthy of the Gospel

I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich…Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer…Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. (Revelation 2:8-10, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Afflictions and poverty. Due to simply being a follower of Christ. Not all that prevalent in the western world for centuries. Especially “to the point of death.” But the signs are not looking good. We were warned to expect it. So, “if the world hates [us], keep in mind that it hated [Christ] first. If [we] belonged to the world, it would love [us] as its own. As it is, [we] do not belong to the world, but [Christ has] chosen [us] out of the world. That is why the world hates [us].” (John 15:18–19, NIV 1984).

A matter of concern? Yes. Something to be feared? No. “In God [we] trust; [we need] not be afraid. What can man do to [us]?” (Psalm 56:11, NIV 1894). Nothing that does not pass through the hands of God first. So, “do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew 10:27–28, NIV 1984).

A reason to lose faith? “At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other.” (Matthew 24:9–10, NIV 1984). But as for us, “whatever happens, [we should] conduct [ourselves] in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ…contending as one [person] for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose [us].” (Philippians 1:27–28, NIV 1984).

My Advice – Whatever happens, “we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage each other with these words.” (1 Thessalonians 4:17–18, NIV 1984). This is indeed an encouraging thought. So, take heart. “The crown of life” awaits!

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
