That You May Believe

This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah. (Matthew 8:17, NIV 1984).

Surely, he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows. (Isaiah 53:4, NIV 1984).

When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. (Matthew 8:16, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The prophecies of Isaiah occurred during the reign of Ahaz, King of Judah, around 800 years prior to their fulfillment. Healing the sick. Driving out evil spirits from the demon possessed. A fulfillment of prophecy that could not be faked. In addition, He exhibited control over nature and raised that dead back to life. It would take someone that was more than a mere mortal. Something only the creator of nature and the giver of life could do.

My Advice“Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:30–31, NIV 1984). How many other signs and miracles? “If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.” (John 21:25, NIV 1984).

“Believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in [Jesus], and [Jesus] in the Father.” (John 10:38, NIV 1984). That Jesus is the Christ, the promised Messiah. That’s why they were written. “That by believing you may have life.” Don’t want to take Matthew’s and John’s word for it? How about Mark and Luke? How about Peter, Paul and James?

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
