But you, Daniel, close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. Many will go here and there to increase knowledge. (Daniel 12:3–4, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Whether or not we are living in the “time of the end,” the “increase [in] knowledge” certainly is a sign of our time. For good or evil, time will tell. Of course, knowledge by itself is no guarantee of good, but it is more than sufficient to fuel evil. Using knowledge for good requires wisdom and discernment along the will to pursue it. But only if that wisdom, discernment, and will are driven by the Holy Spirit. “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.” (1 Corinthians 3:18–19, NIV 1984).
Unfortunately, academia, the gatekeepers of increasing knowledge, have a surplus of “teachers [that] say what their itching ears want to hear and turn their ears away from the truth.” (2 Timothy 4:3–4, NIV 1984). Rejecting the Spirit of wisdom, they are “the man who thinks he knows something [but] does not yet know as he ought to know.” (1 Corinthians 8:1–2, NIV 1984).
My Advice – We must, therefore, “be very careful, then, how [we] live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.” (Ephesians 5:15–16, NIV 1984). Not just how we live, but what we believe. “The Lord gives wisdom…then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.” (Proverbs 2:9, NIV 1984). Knowing how to live and what to believe.
