A God That Looks Like Us?

So, God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him. (Genesis 1:27, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “Using a new technique, psychologists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have reconstructed what Americans think God looks like. In the study…511 Christians were shown hundreds of pairs of faces with various expressions and features. [For each pair] participants were asked to choose which of the two pictures most closely resembled what they thought the Christian deity looked like. The selected faces were then merged to create one face that represented what the average American Christian believes God to look like. The results say a lot about human nature. People often project their beliefs and traits onto others, and our study shows that God’s appearance is no different – people believe in a God who not only thinks like them but also looks like them.” (“This Is What God Looks Like, According to Science,” Ellie Abraham, Indy 100, December 12, 2023).

“According to Science” is a bit of a misnomer to me. Click bait is more like it. At any rate, what God looks like should be the least of our concerns. Like the proverbial question “how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” humans waste a lot of time debating matters with no eternal consequence. Nevertheless, we spend an inordinate amount of time creating God in our own image. And this has nothing to do with what He might “look” like. For, “[we] cannot see [His] face, for no one may see [Him] and live.” (Exodus 33:20, NIV 1984).

It has everything to do with what He is like. His character. Who He is. Unfortunately, most people want a God who “thinks like them.” The kind of God who will accept them just like they are, because they want a God just like they are. He is not. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are [His] ways higher than [our] ways and [His] thoughts than [our] thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9, NIV 1984). And that makes us unacceptable to Him just the way we are.

The problem? There is no change we can make that will make us acceptable. “Without hope and without God in the world.” (Ephesians 2:12, NIV 1984). Excluded from citizenship in the next world.

The solution? There is a choice we can make that will make us acceptable. “But now in Christ Jesus [we] who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. Through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit. No longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s [Kingdom].” (Ephesians 2:13, 18 and 19, NIV 1984).

My Advice – Debate this matter for yourself. It has eternal consequences.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
