Burning Hearts

“Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Such was the experience of two of Jesus’ followers who met Him on the road to Emmaus following His resurrection but did not recognize Him at first. As they walked together, “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He [had] explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.” (Luke 24:27, NIV 1984).

Prior to recognizing Jesus, they shared their hope “that He was the one who was going to redeem Israel.” (Luke 24:21, NIV 1984). After Jesus “opened the Scriptures to [them],” they had to have realized that the truth was much bigger than their hope.

Do we envy the road to Emmaus experience? Today, the Holy Spirit does much the same for believers who are serious students of the Word. “He will guide [us] into all truth.” (John 16:13, NIV 1984). As the Spirit guides, do we have the same experience of “our hearts burning within us?” If not, we are really not envious enough. ““How foolish [we] are, and how slow of heart.” (Luke 24:25, NIV 1984).

My Advice – This is the experience we should seek. “His word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot.” (Jeremiah 20:9, NIV 1984). Don’t hold it in.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
