The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. (Daniel 2:44, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “A lady asked Dr. [Benjamin] Franklin ‘Well Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy.’ “A republic,’ replied the Doctor, ‘if you can keep it.’” (James McHenry, 1753-1816, Maryland delegate to the Constitutional Convention). I wonder how long Benjamin Franklin thought we would be able to keep it. What would become of the “American experiment.” What he would think of its current state. “This city on a hill.”
Kingdoms rise, and kingdoms fall. Some are crushed and brought to an end by others. Some simply fade from prominence or are “left to another people.” Ours will be no different, whether its light continues to shine for generations yet to come or soon dims to darkest night. Whichever the case, it’s lost a bit of its luster of late. They all do sooner or later.
My Musings – Someday, maybe soon, “the kingdom of the world [will] become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever.” (Revelation 11:15, NIV 1984). And when that day comes, “there will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light.” (Revelation 22:5, NIV 1984). Now that’s a shining city on a hill. Won’t you enter its gates?
