Numbers 14:41-45 – But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the Lord’s command? This will not succeed!” Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up. Then the Amalekites attacked them and beat them down. (NIV 1978)
My Musing – In our arrogance, we often presume to know more than God. We are humbled when we find we do not. How much pain and sorrow could be avoided if we humbled ourselves before God at the outset?
My Advice – Do not stay when God says go and do not go when God says stay. There will be many times when God’s plans will not make sense to you. Those are the times you should step out on faith and do what He leads you to do. Do not presume that you know better. You never will.
Numbers 13:30 – Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – The people were looking at the obstacles and were fearful, discouraged and without hope. Caleb remembered what God had promised and where God was leading them and saw beyond the obstacles, because He believed God’s word was greater than the obstacles.
My Advice – Waiting is good when we do not know what God’s will is. But once we know what it is and that the time is right, we should follow His direction. Do this even when it looks risky or too hard. Do not be discouraged. Take possession. You can certainly do it if it is the Lord who is directing you.
Leviticus 18:3 – “You must not so as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – Just because we live in a fallen world, and just because there is evil all around us, does not mean we have to be like those around us.
My Advice – No matter where God takes you in life to work and live, you are likely to find things that are inconsistent with God’s laws. Do not follow the crowd. As a child of God, you are called to be different from the crowd. You may be ridiculed and made fun of, but it will all be worthwhile to hear God say “well done.”
Grow In Holiness
Leviticus 11:44 – “I am the Lord your God, consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am Holy.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – We cannot be holy in the absolute sense that God is. But we should make every effort to develop in holiness as we grow in Christ.
My Advice – You were saved by grace. That secured your salvation and made you a son of God. That is your position which cannot change. Now, be an imitator of God and of His holiness, as you grow in the faith. This is your character, which develops over time.
Make A Difference
Leviticus 5:1 – If a person sins because he does not speak up when he hears a public charge to testify regarding something he has seen or learned about, he will be held responsible. (NIV 1978)
My Musing – We are responsible not only for our actions, but also our inaction. For the things we should do but do not do. We may not always be able to make a difference, but that is not the point. We certainly cannot make a difference if we do not try.
My Advice – Be involved. Make a difference when you can, and at least try even if it is unlikely that your efforts will make a difference. You are not responsible for making a difference, but you are for trying to make a difference.
Walking In Trust
Exodus 23:20 – “See. I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – The way before us may seem dark and uncertain. But if we are walking with Christ, we can be certain that we are nonetheless walking in the light and will come to the place He has prepared for us.
My Advice – Do not feel like you need to know all of the directions or even the destination. Simply trust Him when He tells you to go and go in the direction that He sends you.
God Equips The Called
Exodus 4:10-12 – Moses said to the Lord, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant, I am slow of speech and tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you to speak and will teach you what to say.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – It’s been said that God does not call the equipped, He equips the called. If we felt we were up to the tasks that God calls us to do, perhaps we would be arrogant and too self-sufficient in carrying out the task. And after the task was done, too proud in what we had accomplished.
My Advice – Do not be reluctant to follow the clear calling of God. He will never call you to something that He is not prepared to equip you to carry out. And once you have done it (even as you are doing it), give Him the credit and the praise.
