So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet [Asaph]. (Matthew 13:34–35.
O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old. (Psalms 78:1–2, NIV 1984).
Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. (Matthew 13:34, NIV 1984).
My Musings – This Psalm of Asaph was a maskil (possibly a musical term, alternatively “to give instruction”). Dating this prophecy is difficult, although some scholars date it around the time that the Kingdom split, or the tenth century B.C.
Although speaking in parables might be something a Messianic pretender might be able to pull off, not everyone is gifted with the talent of provocative storytelling. Particularly ones that would remain “hidden” to those with hardened hearts but revealed to those willing to “hear my teaching; [to] listen to the words of my mouth.” This, of course, is the essence of God’s revelations to mankind. Previously “hidden things, things [true] from of old.”
My Advice – Jesus was not only a gifted storyteller but was a revealer to those with “ears to hear” the mysteries of God. “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 4:7, NIV 1984). Make every effort to “hear [His] teaching; [to] listen to the words of [His] mouth.”
