An Ordinary Unschooled Man?

Acts 4:13When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. (NIV 1984)

My Musing – As you might recall, I wrote “A Dad’s Devotions” for my son Joel when he graduated from college.  In the forward I wrote: “My fear: that you will find that I am better at giving advice than I have been at following it. Forgive me. Perfect love drives out fear.”   I might have added as well, “or of living it.”  Today, in this “special edition” of “A Dad’s Devotions” I turn my attention to my dad (who would have turned  86 today), who did live it.

Like Peter and John in the verse above, my dad could be described as an ordinary unschooled man.  But while he may have seemed ordinary Continue reading “An Ordinary Unschooled Man?”

Remembrances of Heaven’s Very Special Child

Remembrances of Heaven’s Very Special Child

A meeting was held quite far from Earth! It’s time again for another birth.

Said the Angels to the LORD above, This Special Child will need much love.

His progress may be very slow. Accomplishments he may not show.
And he’ll require extra care from the folks he meets down there.

He may not run or laugh or play.  His thoughts may seem quite far away,
In many ways he won’t adapt, and he’ll be known as handicapped.

So let’s be careful where he’s sent, we want his life to be content.
Please LORD, find the parents who will do a special job for you.

They will not realize right away the leading role they’re asked to play.
But with this child sent from above, comes stronger faith and richer love.

And soon they’ll know the privilege given, in caring for their gift from Heaven.
Their precious charge, so meek and mild, is HEAVEN’S VERY SPECIAL CHILD.

My Musing – Every child is precious to our Lord, and in a sense is Heaven’s Very Special Child.  But today, if you will indulge me, I am sharing some remembrances of our oldest son Joshua, who died twenty-five years ago today.  He was only nine years old.  Because he was born with severe physical and mental disabilities (see “Cain’t Leaves His Mark”), there would be no graduation celebrations. No major birthday milestones after his first, as he never lived to see double digits. No Continue reading “Remembrances of Heaven’s Very Special Child”

The First Joel

The First Joel – This week is special Sunday edition of my “amusings”, as it is our son Joel’s 33rd birthday, which seems hardly possible.

Because We Say So – As a birthday greeting to Joel, I am sharing one of Eileen and my first pre-blog “A Dad’s Devotions” that we had prepared for Joel when he turned 21. Continue reading “The First Joel”

A Wife Of Noble Character

Wedding Day

Proverbs 31:10-12A wife of noble character who can find?  She is worth far more than rubies.  Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value.  She brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. (NIV 1984)

My Musing – As much as I want to believe that I found her, it was God who brought Eileen into my life.  While we’ve faced many challenges in our journey together, she has always maintained a noble character and has always brought me good. It’s now been forty-two years since we became one.  Happy Anniversary to the love of my life!
