“Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, ‘The LORD will deliver us.’ Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me?” (2 Kings 18:32–35, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “Who of all the ‘gods,'” indeed! Unwittingly, the Assyrian commander was speaking the truth. Those nations that do not trust in the one true God will ultimately fall. As will those who break trust. But those who persist in their trust in Him will continue to have hope. That is why it is so vitally important that America’s motto “In God We Trust” not ring hollow, as it has for some time now. As a nation we have strayed far from it. It may be that it has been only for the sake of the believing remnant that it has not yet fallen. God’s patience may be running out. If so, so is our time.
My Advice – We may not be able to change the course of this country, but we can still, as individuals and the Church, remain true to our God.
