The Virgin Will Be with Child

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet [Isaiah]. (Matthew 1:22, NIV 1984).

The Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14, NIV 1984).

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 1:18, NIV 1984).

God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.” “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:26-27, 30-31, 34–35, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The prophecy of Isaiah occurred during the reign of Ahaz, King of Judah, around 740 years before the birth of Christ. No other person in history has been linked to this prophecy, other than Jesus of Nazareth. Furthermore, this is not a prophecy that could have been orchestrated by a pretender Messiah. Its miraculous circumstance points definitely to “the power of the Most High” and to the conclusion that Jesus is in fact “the Son of God.”

My Advice – Believe the “impossible.” “For nothing is impossible with God.” (Luke 1:36–37, NIV 1984).
