First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation. (2 Peter 3:3–4, NIV 1984).
My Musings – The headline of the webpage reads, “What happened to the religious end of the world?” Of course, predicting specific dates is indeed something to scoff about, which the webpage does. For “no one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36, NIV 1984). Anyone claiming otherwise is a false prophet, and we should not be surprised when dates come and go.
Such false predictions only serve to raise the world’s skepticism that Christ will return at all. “But do not forget this one thing, dear friends…The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with [us], not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.” (2 Peter 3:8–10, NIV 1984). And “like a thief” the “day or hour” of His coming will not be revealed in advance.
Yet there will be signs. Signs recorded in may portions of scripture, such as Matthew 24 and 2 Timothy 3 and 2 Timothy 4. Many of which are appearing with alarming frequency in today’s headlines. “Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door.” (Matthew 24:32–33, NIV 1984). But again, “no one knows about that day or hour.” So, scoff at predicted dates, and I will join you. But do not scoff at the certainty of His return.
My Advice – “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So, you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Matthew 24:42–44, NIV 1984).
Be ready or perish. God is “not wanting anyone to perish.” But the freedom of choice is ours.
