Have You Not Heard?

“Have you not heard?  Long ago I ordained it.  In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass.”  (2 Kings 19:25).

My Musings – The specific context of this verse is the threatened invasion of Judah by Sennacherib king of Assyria, the superpower of that era.  “This is what the LORD [said] concerning the [threatened invasion by the] king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the LORD.” (2 Kings 19:32–33, NIV 1984).

What God ordains, He plans.  What God plans, He brings to pass.  God has ordained and planned for His Son’s return.  We do not know the day or the hour.  We do know the signs of its approach.  We are beginning to see them in the news every day.  The point of the signs is not to pinpoint the time.  The point is for us to be ready when it is time.  “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.”  (Matthew 25:13–14, NIV 1984).  God’s time will come.  It should not matter when, but we should be ready no matter when.

My Advice -One day, there will be the last one of the billions that have ever lived who will place their faith in Christ.  The Father knows who that will be, and when it will happen.  It could be someone you know.  So, let’s not obsess over what current event fits what specific prophecy and how much time that means is left.  There is no “crown” for guessing correctly.  There is for leading others to Christ.

So let us be diligent and faithful in what we have been charged with.  Because someone will be charged with sharing the Gospel with that last convert.  In between, many of us will be charged with sharing the Gospel with countless others.  May the Master find us doing so when He returns.  “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.” (Matthew 24:45–46, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
