Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:1–5, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “The old order of things has passed away.” The “old order,” the curse that marred the first creation, caused by man’s disobedience. Centuries of decline, culminating in “the first heaven and the first earth [passing] away.” Not the end, but a new beginning made possible by Christ’s death and resurrection. “I am making everything new!” More than removing the curse and patching up the old, making all things new. “A new heaven and a new earth.” But better than new, because then “the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them.” A new order where “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”
My Advice – John Lennon wrote “imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try.” Maybe easy, but still just imagination because there really is a heaven. But we can only begin to imagine what it will be like, because He is “making everything new.” One day, maybe soon, we will not have to imagine any longer. In the meantime, our job is to spark the “imagination” of those who do not yet have the hope of having their tears wiped, whether from mourning or pain. The no vacancy sign has not yet been lit up, so let’s get on with it.
