In His Own Image

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26–27, NIV 1984).

My Musings – On the sixth “day,” in His last act of creation, He “created man in His own image.” As a place for man to live, He “planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man [Adam] he had formed… [with] all kinds of trees [growing] out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.” (Genesis 2:8–9, NIV 1984). An idyllic home with plenty of food. Including “a helper [Eve] suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18, NIV 1984).

With Adam being listed in the genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:38), there is every indication that He and Eve were actual people and not imaginary. Since they were created beings (not evolved from some lesser life form), there had to be that first man and woman. They really were there, which is the ultimate reason we are here.

But the main point here, is that “God created man in His own image.” Which makes him different than everything else God created. Not that He looks like a human, or even has a body. For “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24, NIV 1984). As His image bearers, man also has a spirit that continues on after the death of his body. We are intelligent. Able to reason. Created to worship and to seek after God.

My Advice – He made you in His image. Make Him your Lord.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
