“Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How do we rob you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—the whole nation of you—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit,” says the Lord Almighty. (Malachi 3:8–11, NIV 1984).
My Musings – We all have time, talent and treasures at our disposal. And we use them all to make a living for ourselves and our families. But at the end of the day, do we have anything that is leftover to give God? He gave us life (time), provided us with various skills (talent), and enables us to use both to earn a living (treasure).
Giving back is neither an obligation, nor is it compulsory. For we are told that “each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:6–7, NIV 1984). And when we do, as stated, the “floodgates of heaven” are opened to us, “so that in all things at all times, having all that [we] need, [we] will abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NIV 1984). On the contrary. when we do not, “[we] rob God.“
My Advice – “A cheerful giver.” Some will be cheerful the less they give. But we must remember that we are really giving back a portion of what we been given. And, “from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:48, NIV 1984). But when we to give, “it will be given to [us]. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into [our] lap. For with the measure [we] use, it will be measured to [us].” (Luke 6:38, NIV 1984).
