“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:1–5, NIV 1984).
My Musings – We would all do well to pay attention to this, whether we believe Jesus is who He said He was or not. Things would be much more civil that they are. But sadly, human (sin) nature captures our attention more than it ought. Who of us, if we were honest, would really like to be measured by our own measuring stick?
My Advice – “Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the great but judge your neighbor fairly.” (Leviticus 19:15, NIV 1984). If we judged fairly, we would not have to worry about specks or planks. Sadly, we all have differing views on what is fair. In the end, God will judge us. We will be judged by God’s measure (the Law) or by our relationship with Christ (grace). And by the way, “no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law.” (Romans 3:20, NIV 1984), because “whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” (James 2:10, NIV 1984).
