It Is Not the Healthy

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and ‘sinners’?” Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:30–32, NIV 1984).

My Musings – First of all, we must remember that we all need the “doctor.” For in God’s sight “there is no one who does good, not even one.” (Psalm 14:3, NIV 1984). And for those who are now “healthy,” through the grace of God, to look down on or avoid those who have yet to see the “doctor” would be the height of hypocrisy. For, “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy.” (Titus 3:4–5, NIV 1984).

Second, without the witness and example of believers, those who are still sick can only see themselves through the eyes of the culture. Seeing no real difference in themselves from the rest of society, how can they easily recognize the symptoms of their sickness? For this reason, like Jesus, we must associate with sinners who likely don’t know they need the Great Physician’s cure.

My Musings – Let’s be in the world, not of the world. “[We] are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let [our] light shine before men, that they may see [our] good deeds and praise [our] Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16, NIV 1984). But we must never forget that we are not the source of the Light, but merely a reflection of it.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
