The Word Was God

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:1–3, NIV 1984).

My Musings – When I read the first verse of Genesis, my mind thinks “In the beginning God [was already there].” (Genesis 1:1, NIV 1984). John, in his Gospel adds that He, the Word, that is Jesus, God the Son. He “was with God in the beginning.” And that He participated with God Father in creation. That “without Him nothing was made that has been made.” And they were not alone. For “the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Genesis 1:2, NIV 1984).

This is some pretty heavy stuff. What it is, is a glimpse of the Trinity. God in three persons. What it is not, is some polytheistic mumbo, jumbo. For the Scriptures are very clear. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4, NIV 1984). One is essence, existing in three persons. Easy to articulate, but impossible to fully comprehend. For how can the finite comprehend the infinite?

Here are a couple ways of thinking about it:

Not one, plus one, plus one equals three. Rather one, times one, times one equals one.

Yet neither of these can adequately convey the mystery of the Godhead. For once again, how can the finite comprehend the infinite?

My Advice – One cannot believe that Jesus was who He said He was, without believing this. “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:29–30, NIV 1984). This we take by faith. “And without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.

  1. Your diagram is a great way of understanding the trinity. And this: “Not one, plus one, plus one equals three. Rather one, times one, times one equals one.” I printed this off. Thank you, Steve! 🙂
