From the Scriptures

The brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. They [the Bereans] received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. (Acts 17:10, 11, NIV 1984).

My Musings – It is likely that Paul did the same thing in Berea that he did in Thessalonica. “As his custom was, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. ‘This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ.'” (Acts 17:2–3, NIV 1984).

He was not well-received in Thessalonica, and had to leave the city under the cover of darkness. The Berean’s response was “more noble” in that they ]”received the message with great eagerness.” Nevertheless, they still “examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

My Advice – As we share the good news, we should not feel threatened when people want to examine its veracity. We should encourage it. The truth is never afraid of objective scrutiny where the underlying motive is to follow the truth wherever it takes you. “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding.” (Proverbs 23:23, NIV 1984).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
