Foolish Things

Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. (1 Corinthians 1:26–29, NIV 1984).

My Musings“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8–9, NIV 1984).

Who would have ever thought that God would not require us to earn our redemption? That He pay the price and then give it away? That would be unwise by human standards.

That He would choose fishermen, a tax-collector and an enemy of the faith to spread the Gospel rather than the influential and those of noble birth? Not who you would expect good results from.

That the weak, despised and lowly would be more likely to respond to the Gospel, than those who are strong, admired and lofty? Not what you would think He would want for subjects in His Kingdom.

My Advice – His ways and His thoughts. He has shared the mystery of these through His Word. Hard to believe? But we must. Hard to receive? It’s only ours if we do. “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” (John 1:12–13, NIV 1984). Now that’s a noble birth! Let’s not refuse it.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
