“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” (Matthew 7:21–24, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name.” (Theme song from Cheers). The passing of George Wendt, the actor who played Norman Peterson on the television series Cheers got me to thinking. He was one of only three characters who appeared in all 275 episodes. He would enter the bar, say something like “good evening, everyone” and be greeted by virtually everyone in the bar with “Norm!” Everyone knew his name. They were glad he came.
When all is said and done, it doesn’t matter how well known you are here. What matters is does He know you. “But it’s me, Norm Peterson. Everyone knows me. My name must be written in that book somewhere.” How sad to hear the reply, “it’s not there. I never knew you. Away from Me.“
My Advice – “Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got.”(Theme song from Cheers). But making your way into His Heavenly Kingdom takes only one thing. Being known by His name. Sometime, trust me, you will want to go there. Will He know your name? Is it written in His book? “Everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.” (Mathew 7:8, NIV 1984). Seek. Knock. Ask. When that door opens and you enter His Kingdom, I imagine that everyone will know your name. They will all be glad you came. And there will be lots of cheers.
