Acts 4:19 – But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God.” (NIV 1978)
My Musings – It is not what the world views as right or even what we view as right that is the determinant. It is what God views as right. Unfortunately, many times we are using the wrong standard to determine what is right.
My Advice – There will be times as an employee, as a citizen and as a friend that you will have to make this judgment for yourself. Who do you follow? Who do you obey? When there is a conflict, obey God. He will empower you to do so.
John 9:4 – “His sheep follow Him because they know His voice.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – There are two reasons why people might not know the His voice. First, they might not know Him, they are not saved. Second, while saved, they have not developed a close enough relationship with Him that His voice is recognizable.
My Advice – If you find it hard to know whether or not God is “speaking” to you, then you probably need to work on the relationship. Are you getting sufficient exposure to His Word by attending church regularly and daily reading/meditation, that when He speaks (through others, “feelings” circumstances, etc…) you know it is His “voice”?
Or possibly the work of a Cereal killer?
James 2:14 -24 – What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. (NIV 1984)
My Musings – Early in his post-reformation ministry, Martin Luther referred to the Epistle of James as Continue reading “A Rigor Mortis Faith”
Zephaniah 3:17 – The Lord God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. (NIV 1978)
My Musings – These are all things that God desires for us. His might saves us so He can delight in us, love us and rejoice over us.
My Advice – God has richly blessed your life. Show your gratitude to Him by continuing to live a life that He delights in and rejoices over.
James 4:7 – Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (NIV 1978)
My Musings – Sin. Our earthly nature. We read the items on the list (sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed – among others) and are outwardly repulsed by them. Yet, because we still have a sin nature (our old self) we Continue reading “Holds Out Against Sin”
Hosea 6:6 – “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” (NIV 1978)
My Musings – God is merciful. He will freely forgive. But He would much rather that we not break His commandments and need to ask forgiveness.
My Advice – Better to obey God in the first place than to sin and have to ask His forgiveness.
Daniel 6:4, 5 – At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find charges against Daniel…but they were unable to do so. Finally these men said, “We will never find any basis for charges…unless it has something to do with the law of his God.” (NIV 1978)
My Musings – What a tribute to Daniel that the only thing they could find fault with was in his obedience to and worship of God.
My Advice – Consider it an honor when people find fault with you for being a Christian and for serving Christ.
