My Musing – When I was young, my family’s social life revolved around the church and its gatherings. If the doors were open, we were there. At a minimum, this meant Sunday school, morning worship, Sunday evening services and Wednesday prayer meeting. Our church also had one to two week “revivals” in the fall and spring. If we missed,
people were on the phone to see what was wrong. Of course, we were not the only ones with this habit.
Today is different. Church attendance is declining for a variety of reasons. But what is disturbing is the decline in attendance by the “faithful.” There are so many things nowadays that seem to take precedence over meeting with the rest of the flock. It is true that you can worship just about anywhere, but it is hard to fellowship with fellow believers when you do not come together. It is hard to give and receive encouragement when you are not there.
Compare this with life’s other experiences. Which is better, tickets on the fifty-yard line or watching the game on TV? Taking off work to attend your child’s class play, or hearing him tell you about it at the supper table (don’t get me started on family eating supper together) after work? Visiting with family in-person or catching up on Skype? Would you rather watch the President’s (pick your favorite President) State of the Union address in the same Capitol chamber or watch the feed in the overflow room? Eat alone or dine with good friends?
And when it is all said and done, which is better, meeting Christ in the air or catching it on live-stream?
