Worthless As A Wandering Star

I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.  Shepherds who feed only themselves…clouds without rain…autumn trees without fruit…waves of the sea foaming up their shame… wandering stars. (Jude 3-3, 12–13, NIV 1984).

My Musings – I think that our greatest fear as a Church has been that the fierce persecution that characterized the first and second century will return, as it already has in much of world.  That fear is increasingly palpable and has, perhaps, diverted our attention from what I believe is a far greater threat to the Church.  Jude wrote about it.  People or movements (“shepherds feeding only themselves”) that “change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord,” leading the flock astray.

We sound the alarm and raise the drawbridge against the enemy of persecution that threatens our gates, while dropping our guard and allowing the Trojan horse of heresy into our citadel.  Clouds that promise rain, but come up dry.  Like autumn trees, there is no real fruit.  They stir up waves of discontent with the true Gospel.  As worthless as a wandering star would be for navigating the truth.

My Advice – We have been entrusted with the truth and must re-double our efforts in contending for the true faith. Souls are at stake.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
