Mad Scientists

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:3, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “There are none so blind as those who will not see. The most deluded people are those who choose to ignore what they already know.” (attributed to John Heywood, ca. 1546).

Will Not See Hear this, you foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear.  (Jeremiah 5:21, NIV 1984).

Ignore What They KnowThe wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Romans 1:18–20, NIV 1984).

I did not plan another post on science, but then I ran across this article on a newsfeed. “Some Scientists Believe the Universe Is Conscious,” (Caroline Delbert, June 15, 2021, Prevention). I respect science, but there are certain claims made in the name of science that, as a recipient of God’s saving grace, I find incredulous (“foolish and senseless“). These claims seem to me to be more about “suppressing the truth” (any explanation but God will do) rather than science in its purest form (the systematic study of the nature and behavior of the material and physical universe, based on observation, experiment, and measurement, and the formulation of laws to describe these facts in general terms — The Free Dictionary). For example:

  • How can one systematically study and observe the far reaches of the cosmos and the inner workings of biological organisms and conclude random chance and “natural” selection over intelligent design?
  • How can one be so caught up in the possibility of finding signs of “life” in the form of microbes on a distant moon or planet yet casually disregard the beating heart of an unborn child?
  • How can one postulate that extra-terrestrials may have genetically engineered humans and discount the existence of a transcendent God?
  • How can one theorize that the universe might be conscious and ignore the God who gave us consciousness and conscience?

Has science gone mad?  Or worse, have we become so enamored by “science” that we blindly believe any claim made in the name of science?  As C.S. Lewis once stated, “in the modern world, people will believe almost anything if it is dressed up in the name of science.”

My Advice – The “invisible” is “clearly seen, being understood from what has been made,” based upon “observation, experiment, and measurement.” We have no excuse. Unfortunately, many “choose to ignore what they already know.” Not seeing with their eyes or hearing with their ears. It is not that they cannot see or hear, but rather that they will not see or hear what God has made plain. Choose to see God’s fingerprint all over his creation. Choose to hear God’s voice echoing down through the ages speaking His creation into existence.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
