Showing the Way

The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” (Genesis 12:1, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Abram, later renamed Abraham, was a descendant of Shem the oldest son of Noah. Imagine being asked to “leave your country, your people and your father’s household.” Not only that, but to “go to the land I will show you.” Leave what you know to go into what you don’t know.

“So, Abram left, as the Lord had told him.” (Genesis 12:4, NIV 1984). Just exactly what you or I would do, right? Yeah, right. In exchange for his obedience, God promised to “make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:2–3, NIV 1984).

Great Nation. And His descendants did become a great nation. But unfortunately, they were not always as obedient to the Lord’s commands as Abram was. They frequently strayed from where God showed them. For this, they suffered much throughout history. Yet the Jewish people survive to this day. For even “if [they] are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.” (2 Timothy 2:13, NIV 1984). He is faithful to His unconditional promises.

Great Name. Abraham is held in great honor and esteem by three major religions: Jewish, Islam, and Christianity.

Peoples Blessed. Jesus. A descendant of Abraham. Specifically, the tribe of Judah, his great grandson. The promised Messiah. Savior not only to the Jews, but to the gentiles. “All peoples.”

My Advice– “Go to the [place] I will show you.” What place? “Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?’ Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” (John 14:5–6, NIV 1984). It took faith for Abram to go with Him. It takes faith for you to come to Him. But, you will be blessed is you do.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.

  1. This popped out to me today: “and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” To name a few:
Jonas Salk (creator of the first polio vaccine), Albert Sabin (oral polio vaccine), Galileo, Elie Wiesel, Albert Einstein, Jerry Lewis who raised more than $2 billion dollars for his Muscular Dystrophy Association Charity, Jerry’s Kids. And the list is endless! Blessings, Steve!
