What a Day May Bring Forth

Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34, NIV 1884).

My Musings – Borrowing trouble. Paying interest on a debt you may not owe. Things my dad would say. Afterall, “who of [us] by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (Matthew 6:27, NIV 1984). No one that I know of. Here ae a couple more takes on worrying.

“‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.'” (Luke 10:41–42, NIV 1984). Martha was worried about making sure everything was “just so” for her honored houseguest. So much so, that she had no time to spend with Him. Mary on the other hand considered fellowshipping with Him much more important.

“‘I’ll say to myself, you have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.’ ‘But God said to him, you fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'” (Luke 12:19–20, NIV 1984). This “certain rich man” worried about having enough space for the “stuff” he had accumulated that would allow him to enjoy a frivolous lifestyle the rest of his life. As it turned out, what he had was more than ample for the rest of the day he had left.

My Advice – Our lives should be primarily focused on our relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. “Do not boast [or worry] about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” (Proverbs 27:1, NIV 1984). But we can know what eternity “[will] bring forth” if we have placed our faith in Jesus. This is “one thing [that] is needed.”
