In Name Only

“The people have broken my covenant and rebelled against my law. Israel cries out to me, ‘O our God, we acknowledge you!’ But Israel has rejected what is good.” (Hosea 8:1–3, NIV 1984).

My Musings – How can it be claimed that “we acknowledge [God],” yet “[reject] what is good,” “[break His] covenant,” and “[rebel] against [His] law?” What was true of Israel then is true of many who claim to be Christians today.

Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'” (Matthew 7:21–23, NIV 1984).

Doing “the will of [His] Father” begins with acknowledging that He is the Christ. Knowing Him as Savior. Doing things in name only, without a transformed heart, is the ultimate in rejecting “what is good.”

My Advice – Doing things in His name only is spiritual identity theft and will only result in rejection. Be a true heir.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
