Proverbs 30:7-9 – Two things I ask of you O Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. (NIV 1978)
My Musings – Once we begin to pursue things that exceed our needs, we begin to get ourselves into trouble. Too much, leads to greed. Too little leads to irresponsibility.
My Advice – Be careful of setting too much of your heart on success and wealth, lest you become greedy, envious or feeling self-sufficient. These things can easily become the object of your affection rather than God.
Proverbs 23:4 – Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. (NIV 1984)
My Musings – We often wear ourselves out accumulating things to own, only to find out that they own us.
My Advice – There is nothing wrong with wanting to get ahead, as long as it does not consume us. It is foolish to pursue wealth to such an extent that we do not have time to enjoy it, enjoy our friends and enjoy our life.
Psalms 23:2,3 – He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. (NIV 1984)
My Musings – When we are at our wits end we do not always want to take time to rest. It is then that He takes hold of us and makes us rest. We scurry around frantically and He takes our hands to lead us. And suddenly we are rested and on the right path – rested.
My Advice – When rest comes unexpectedly in the midst of stress, and guidance in the midst of not knowing where to turn, consider it the hand of God.
