You Can Drive Them Out
Joshua 18:18 – “Though the Canaanites have iron chariots and though they are strong, you can drive them out.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – For most of us, the “Canaanites” that we face are those sins and habits that we want to hold onto, but deep down in our hearts we know that we should not hold onto. The desire to hold on (our sin nature) can be very strong, but not so strong that with the help of the Holy Spirit we cannot drive them out.
My Advice – Never let yourself become convinced that you cannot overcome a sinful habit or sinful nature. While it may seem like you will be going up against an “iron chariot” on foot, He who is in you is greater than any old iron chariot.
Until You Remove It
Joshua 7:11, 13b – “Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things. O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – As Christians, we are God’s chosen. But just like Israel, who was also God’s chosen; we cannot expect Him to bless us, prosper us or rescue us from difficulties as long as we have unrepented sin in our lives.
My Advice – Do not expect God’s full blessings during periods that you are have unconfessed sins in your life. We may be under grace and the freedom that accompanies it, but we still have a responsibility to obey His moral law. It is unrealistic for us to expect His full blessing when we do not give Him full obedience.
When God Seems Distant
Deuteronomy 4:29 – But if you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul. (NIV 1978)
My Musing – When we cannot seem to find God, it is not because He is distant or making things difficult. We may simply have not sought Him as earnestly and as diligently as we should.
My Advice – God will seem distant to you at times. It will never be because He has moved away from you. Perhaps you have moved away from Him? Or perhaps you are not sincere enough in your seeking (seeking with wrong motives or a wrong attitude)? At such a time it is good to assess your relationship. Like the prodigal son’s father, He will be looking for your return.
The Blame Game
Take a look at the today’s “amusing” cartoon. Ever had that experience. Dumb computer, it cannot possibly be my fault could it?
In reality, this is just a new spin on a very old problem. Take these for example: (all from NIV 1984). Continue reading “The Blame Game”
If They Knew
Numbers 32:23 – “But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the Lord; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – If we knew we would get caught, we likely not take the risk. Yet with sin we do it all the time. We can never get away with it.
My Advice – As you make decisions in life, big or small, think of the people who are most important to you and ask yourself this question: “would it make a difference if they knew?” Assume that they will and use that as a guide in making the decision.
Right Thing, Right Way, Right Reason
Leviticus 19:5 – When you sacrifice a fellowship offering to the Lord, sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf. (NIV 1978)
My Musing – We know that the world is full of people who do the wrong thing. There are also many who may be doing the right thing, but in the wrong way or with the wrong intent. This may be just as bad as doing the wrong thing.
My Advice – It is not enough to do the right thing. Do it the right way and with the right motive. But never use this as an excuse, however, to do the wrong thing (or to not do the right thing).
Take A Stand
Exodus 23:2 – “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong.” (NIV 1978)
My Musing – We know what is right and what is wrong. God has put it in our heart and He speaks to us through His Holy Spirit. But it seems so hard to do what is right when everyone else is doing what is wrong. But morality is not a democracy. No matter how many may call a wrong right, it will not make it right.
My Advice – Be courageous. Do not be timid in taking your stand even when everyone else is against you. If you know in your heart it is right, God will give you the strength to stand against all odds. If God is for you, who can be against you?
