Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit into a desert. There I saw a woman … dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls. She held a golden cup in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries. This title was written on her forehead: MYSTERY BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES, AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman [who sits on many waters] …. Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages … [t]he woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth.” (Revelation 17:3-7, 15, 18)
“Do not cite the Deep Magic to me, Witch. I [Aslan] was there when it was written.” (
When we first encounter Narnia in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe it looks like a snow-laden wonderland of sorts. It’s kind of magical, really. But as Mr. Tumnus the faun soon reveals, there is apparently something sinister behind the beautiful quiet of the falling snowflakes. He tells Lucy that the White Witch “has got all Narnia under her thumb. It’s she that makes it always winter. Always winter and never Christmas; think of that!” Sounds horrible. My Musings – There are various interpretations concerning this “mysterious” mother of prostitutes recorded in the book of Revelation. Perhaps we will not fully understand the mystery until the end time events unfold. But in the Old Testament, wayward Israel was often referred to as a prostitute. We are now in the Church age and many churches, like Israel of old, are prostituting themselves with the world system. Paul warned us that “the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths” (2 Timothy 4:3–4, NIV 1984), that a “rebellion” (apostacy, falling away) against God’s Word would precede Christ’s return (2 Thessalonians 2:3).
My Advice – We must resist being “bewitched” and led astray by this “harlot.” If we doubt this is already taking place, we have already fallen under her “deep magic spell.” We must recall the “height from which [we] have fallen,” and “do the things [we] did at first.” (Revelation 2:5). A time is coming when the “harlot” will “[rule] over the kings of the earth.” But our King performed the “deeper magic” at Calvary and the gates of hell shall not prevail against the true Church. She will never get it fully “under her thumb.” A remnant will remain until He calls it home. “Christmas” is on the way.
