Study 2: God’s Plan For Us

It is an impersonal world and all too often we create God in our image and assume that He is an impersonal God who is not interested in us at all. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

These are His words. They should be enough to convince us. He is, after all, God. But we also live in a world of skepticism. To many, talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words. Well, God’s actions speak very loud and are very clear. And, we need go no further than the first book of the Bible to see them clearly demonstrated in the account of our creation.

1. God took special care when he created man and woman. He made us different than everything else that He created. According to the following verse from the Bible, we are different because we are created in God’s image.

Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)

2. According to the following verse from the Bible, the common characteristic of everything that God created was that it was good.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. (Genesis 1:31)

3. As the following verse from the Bible shows, it was common in the beginning for God to walk in fellowship amongst His creation.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day. (Genesis 3:8)

According to His original blueprint, God’s plan for us was flawless. We were, after all, created in His image. This characteristic distinguished us from everything else that He created. A characteristic that we shared with everything else that He created was that we were good. This means that not only were we good, but everything that He created for our enjoyment was also good. There was nothing that was not good. In the beginning, God also interacted with man personally. He walked among His creation, indicating a level of fellowship and intimacy that has not been matched since. All these things (created in His image, created good and fellowship with God) evidence a caring and loving relationship that our Heavenly Father had planned for us.

God is love. We love because He first loved us. (1 John 4:16, 19)

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
