And That’s The Way It Is

Praise be to the LORD, who has given rest to his people Israel just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises he gave through his servant Moses. May the LORD our God be with us as he was with our fathers; may he never leave us nor forsake us.”  (1 Kings 8:56–57, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Walter Cronkite was the anchor of CBS Evening News from 1962 until his retirement in 1981. He was noted for his honesty, impartiality, level-headedness, and voice of reason. With his familiar nightly sign-off “and that’s the way it is,” viewers felt they could believe that was the way it was, because Walter reported it.  Although he had his detractors, according to polls he was once considered the man that Americans most trusted.

While listening to a podcast today, the speaker noted that consumers do not believe the claims of marketers because they’ve been lied to so much.  For whatever reason, that got me thinking about how the “news” is communicated today and how different it seems from my early childhood to early adulthood — the years of Walter Cronkite.  Then, we believed we were being told the truth.  Today, we believe we are being lied to. Perhaps that’s being a little melodramatic, but “that’s the way it is” or at least the way it seems to be, to a large segment of society.

Wouldn’t it be great to once again have someone you could turn to that was noted for their “honesty, impartiality, level-headedness, and voice of reason?”  There is, and always has been, and it isn’t Walter Cronkite.  Not one word, not one “jot or tittle” of any of God’s unconditional promises have ever failed or ever will fail.  Truth and trustworthiness.  You cannot have one without the other.  This is a trait that the Father passed on to His Son.  Jesus said that on the third day He would rise again, and He did.  Jesus said that He would come again, and He will.  In between these two events, Jesus promised that he would not leave us as orphans. “I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”  (John 14:16–18, NIV 1984).  And He did.

My Advice – Trust God.  Place your trust in His Son.  Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
