The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. (Psalm 33:10-11, 16-17, 20-21, NIV 1984).
My Musings – If we work at cross-purposes to the plans of the Lord God Almighty, He will “foil [our] plans” and “thwart [our] purposes.” Our plans will crumble and fall, while His “stand firm forever.” Our great strength cannot save or salvage our plans. Out best course of action is to “wait in hope for the LORD.“
My Advice – This is true on both an individual and a national level.
To the individual – Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:28–31, NIV 1984). Are you weary and feeling weak? Ready to stumble and fall? Put your hope in the LORD and get ready to soar.
To the nation – “When I…send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:13–14, NIV 1984). Seen much humility in our land lately? Much seeking of God’s face? A willingness to turn from ways that run counter (wicked) to His righteous commands? If not, do we really expect Him to hear?
