“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” (Proverbs 1:7, 29–33, NIV 1984).
My Musings – The “fear of the LORD” involves worship of the Lord and respectful submission to His authority in every area of life. (The Apologetics Study Bible: Real Questions, Straight Answers, Stronger Faith, Holman Bible Publishers.) If not checked, lack of respect and submission to His authority can lead us down a very slippery slope that can ultimately result in us despising the wisdom of His Word, and not accepting the advice it contains for Godly living. We risk not only growing wayward, but may actually find ourselves scheming to get around and justify not following what we know is right and true. In many respects, I fear this is where we find ourselves as a nation. We’ve gone down that slippery slope and are beginning to reap what we have sown and “eat the fruit of [our] ways.” In the end (if not corrected) it will, just like many nations that preceded us, lead to our destruction.
My Advice – Pray for our nation. Pray for our world. But first, let’s examine out own hearts. Are we part of the problem or are we contributing to the solution.
