What I Mean Is This

“I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says, ‘I follow Paul’; another, ‘I follow Apollos’; another, ‘I follow Cephas’; still another, ‘I follow Christ.’ Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?” (1 Corinthians 1:10–13, NIV 1984).

My Musings – One of you says, “I follow Donald,” and another “I follow Joe.”  I think what the above text is clearly saying is that we need a three-party system in the United States (like Paul, Apollos, and Cephas), instead of the two we have traditionally had.

Of course I am just kidding, but the divisions and quarrels that occur every four years have, in recent memory, spilled over to become the status quo.  No more coming together after the election to heal the wounds and turn the attention towards governing and representing the voters, regardless of which party won the election.  How very sad and disheartening.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “My dream is of a place and a time where America will once again be seen as the last best hope of earth.”  That was a noble dream then and a noble dream now, because many around the world (and in our country) have their doubts.  But in reality, as many of us know, we crucified the last best hope of earth.  And it was that very act, followed by our Lord’s resurrection, that guaranteed that He was and is the only hope for mankind.

My Advice – Whether we follow Donald or Joe in secular matters of who best can govern, we know that neither one of them, the ones that preceded them, or the ones that will follow, never have and never will be crucified for us.

Vote your conscience this November, we may not agree about that.  But let’s agree with one another about following Christ.  Let there be no quarrels or divisions about that.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
