When Monkeys Fly

“They are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” (John 17:14–15).

“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4, NIV 1984).

My Musings – The Wizard of Oz, one of my favorites as a child, and probably the all-time favorite of my son Joel when he was a child (maybe even as an adult).  There were many memorable and impactful lines in that movie.  But this one (I think from the book and not the movie), fits this Sunday’s amusing. “We dare not harm this little girl, for she is protected by the Power of Good, and that is greater than the Power of Evil. All we can do is carry her to the castle of the Wicked Witch and leave her there.” – Wizard of Oz.

The little girl, Dorothy, was “not of the world” she was journeying through, anymore than we are of this world any more (if we are in Christ).  The  minions of the wicked witch (flying monkeys, who apparently in the book could also talk), realized that power of good that protected Dorothy was greater than the power of evil that they served.  All they could do was carry her to the threshold of evil, beyond that they had no power.

So it is with those of us who have been born again.  The power of good that resides in us (the Holy Spirit), is greater than any evil that will ever tempt us or confront us.  The evil power of this world (Satan), knows this.  He is powerless to make us fall — unless we give it to him.  He can carry us to the threshold of sin through deception, lies, and temptation, but no further.  If we cross that threshold, it is through concession, not coercion.  We have the power to resist, but only if we use it.

My Advice – If you have not been born again, the evil one already has you in his power.  Once you accept Christ you are freed from this bondage.  The power of the Holy Spirit is at your disposal.  Isn’t this something you would want?

If you have been born again, know this — you are no longer subject to the evil one.  You are the child of God.  Use the power that is your born again birthright to resist the devil.  He will flee from you, because the One standing behind you casts a very long shadow.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
