“This is what the LORD says, he who appoints the sun to shine by day, who decrees the moon and stars to shine by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the LORD Almighty is his name: ‘Only if these decrees vanish from my sight,’ declares the LORD, ‘will the descendants of Israel ever cease to be a nation before me.’ This is what the LORD says: ‘Only if the heavens above can be measured and the foundations of the earth below be searched out will I reject all the descendants of Israel because of all they have done,’ declares the LORD.” (Jeremiah 31:35–37, NIV 1984).
My Musings – This promise has not been given to the United States, or to any nation for that matter, other than the nation of Israel. Nations have risen and fallen, and will continue to do so. But since 1948, I think it is safe to say that Israel will outlast them all. That is unless “these decrees vanish from my sight…the heavens can be measured and the foundations of the earth searched out.“
Only in arrogance can it be said that we (the U.S. and its allies) are the protector of of this tiny nation. Rather our special relationship with Israel may be the only thing that keeps us from becoming one of the fallen nations.
My Advice – Let’s not forsake or “reject the descendants of Israel.” I think we need them more than they need us.
