Just Do It

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, NIV 1984).

My Musings – “Gratitude is what you feel. Thanksgiving is what you do.” (Tim Keller).  When you feel gratitude, it is easy to do thanksgiving.  We Americans are so efficient, we can condense it down to just one day year (touch of sarcasm there).  But when we are not feeling the gratitude, it is more often than not hard to thanksgiving.  But Paul exhorts us to “give thanks in all circumstances.”  Good times and bad, easy or hard, happy or sad.  If we know we should give thanks, even if we are not feeling it, but we go ahead and do it anyway, perhaps this is the most genuine expression of thanks.

My Advice – While we’re at it, “be joyful always; pray continually,” (1 Thessalonians 5:16–17).

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
