True North

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter [who put north for south and south for north]. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes
and clever in their own sight.  (Isaiah 5:20–21, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Scientists are telling us that a “polar flip” (where magnetic poles reverse) may be in our near future.  North becomes south and south becomes north.  Of course, it is only the magnetic north that is “going south.”  Geographic north, or “true north,” will be unaffected as it is determined by the earth’s axis, which is unchanging.  Opinion’s vary on the implications of a polar flip from not that significant to catastrophic.

Over the last generation or two we have witnessed a different kind of “polar flip,” where the world’s moral compass  has dramatically shifted. What is considered morally acceptable has really “gone south.”  What was once applauded and accepted is now condemned and rejected, and vice versa.  Of course, as followers of Christ, we know that “true north,” as measured by God’s Word is unaffected by the shift in social mores.  His Word never changes.  “True north” remains the same, even though the culture around us is going polar opposites on right and wrong.

My Advice –   The implications of a moral “polar flip,” will ultimately be catastrophic.  Up to this point God has been long-suffering, but it will not always be so.  The tribulation will come.  Until that time we must continue to keep our bearings.  We must be ever diligent to make sure that the “magnetic attractions” of the culture around us that are contradictory to God’s Word do not take us off course.  Let’s keep our eyes focused on Christ, who is not only the “bright and morning star,”  He is our north star.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
