Overcomers

This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (1 John 5:3–5, NIV 1984).

My Musings – These are some pretty profound thoughts for a fisherman.  No wonder the religious leaders “took note that [he] had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13, NIV 1984).

  • Everyone – “born of God overcomes the world.”
  • Only – “he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”

We are not “born of God” by obeying His commands.  Indeed we cannot “obey His commands” until we are born of God. Then, what we could not do before, is no longer burdensome.  Of course that does not mean that we will always obey His commands.  Before we did not because we were unable.  After, we sometimes do not because we are unwilling.  But we show our love and gratitude by obeying them.

  • Exclusive – only those who believe “that Jesus is the Son of God” are “born of God.
  • Inclusive – Everyone who does believe are “born of God.

My Advice – We want to be one of the “every ones” by believing in the “only One.”

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
