“We have an obligation—but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (Romans 8:12–14, NIV 1984).
My Musings – “We have an obligation” to live “by the Spirit.” Obligation is defined as an act or course of action to which a person is morally or legally bound; a duty or commitment. For those of us who have accepted Christ’s atoning death on our behalf, we are morally bound if not legally bound. It is a voluntary commitment if not a mandatory duty.
Being “led by the Spirit” is evidence that we “are sons of God.” This is not to say we won’t have lapses now and then, sometimes big ones. But the general pattern and trend of a redeemed life is one that is characterized by living according to the Spirit. If not, then one should seriously re-evaluate validity of their initial commitment to Christ.
My Advice – How are you being led? Make sure it is by the Spirit of God.
