“I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit— just as you were called to one hope when you were called— one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.” (Ephesians 4:1–7, NIV 1984).
My Musings – Whatever your calling is, it is just as Christ has apportioned (assigned according to a plan) it. Many members, each with a different calling, constituting one body, with one hope through the sacrifice of one Lord, to one faith, which is the one path that leads to the one God.
Live it worthily, characterized by humility, gentleness, patience, long-suffering (bearing), love, unity and peaceableness. Consistently. Not just when it is convenient, not just when things are going well, not just with those exhibiting the same characteristics, the same color of skin, the same ethnicity, or coming from the same socio-economic group.
As we grow in grace, this may take effort on our part. We are urged to “make every effort.” It is worth making and keeping.
My Advice – We know this does not describe the world we live in. It never has. But it should describe the Body of Christ. If it does not consistently describe us (I know we all mess up from time-to-time) as individual members, then we need to evaluate whether or not we are making “every effort.”
