Indulging Which Nature?

“Everything is permissible”—but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”—but not everything is constructive.” (1 Corinthians 10:23, NIV 1984).

My Musings – Why would anyone want to do anything that did not result in something good (beneficial) or useful (constructive)?  Yet that is the way we often choose to use our freedom.  In fact, often the choices we freely make are detrimental and destructive.  We “were called to be free. But [we should] not use [our] freedom to indulge the sinful nature.” (Galatians 5:13, NIV 1984).

My Advice“So I [Paul] say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary [detrimental and destructive] to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary [beneficial and constructive] to the sinful nature.” (Galatians 5:16–17, NIV 1984).   Could not have said it better myself.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
