Must I Come Empty-Handed

The Brew Is A Musing

“No man should appear before the LORD empty-handed: Each of you must bring a gift in proportion to the way the LORD your God has blessed you.” (Deuteronomy 16:16–17, NIV 1984).

My Musings – While the immediate context of this verse applies to only three specific annual feasts, I think the principle is a good one for today.  God is only asking for us to return a portion (in proportion) of what He has blessed us with.  We are not empty-handed only because of His blessings.  So we should not come to Him empty-handed.

My Advice – My mom and dad always said “you cannot out give God.”  They gave when they had no idea of how they were going to make ends meet.  But somehow (because God out gave them), they always did.  While that was never their motive for giving, it was always the outcome of their giving.

I was raised in a Christian family and my earliest childhood memories include regular Sunday school and Church attendance as a family. I was taught that our Judeo-Christian values were not just a part of our Sunday routine they should be part of our character and influence all aspects of our lives. I was also taught that as important as these values were they could not save us. We must also be “born again” by accepting Christ.
